The IET Young Professionals' Event 2009

Tuesday, 19 May 2009
Savoy Place, London, UK

Dear Colleague

The world's largest scientific experiment... studying the smallest components

Designed to be especially relevant for engineering and physics professionals at the start of their careers, this is your exclusive opportunity to hear the latest news on CERN's Large Hadron Collider and unravel the mysteries of particle physics.

This event is free to attend - register your place today at www.theiet.org/young-professionals

A bit about the presentation

The Large Hadron Collider has had many years of effort invested in its design and construction. It has been built to study the very smallest components of the universe - the fundamental building blocks of nature. And we are increasingly realising that we need to discover and understand far more.

Lyn Evans is the Project Leader for CERN's Large Hadron Collider. His talk will provide further detail concerning the technical innovation involved in this £1 billion project. With a special focus on the challenges faced when designing and constructing the world's largest particle accelerator, this lecture will provide a rare opportunity to understand more about this unique engineering feat.

Tara Shears will describe some of the outstanding mysteries and open questions in particle physics, which the LHC has been designed to help investigate. She will explore the search for the Higgs boson; the problem of antimatter; the search for dark matter, and how the LHC can use data from these experiments to help us understand more of the universe.

Networking Opportunity

A drinks reception will be held after the presentations, which is free of charge and open to all. We welcome everyone attending the talk to join us and network with your fellow professionals.

Outside of the London area?

If you're unable to come to Savoy Place to participate in person, we have the solution to ensure you don't miss out! IET.TV will be filming the presentations and will be making live streaming available. Why not organise a local viewing? Marketing materials can be provided to aid your planning. Please make your requests to eventsa2@theiet.org

There will also be an interactive chatroom available so that you can ask questions or make comments during the discussion.
